Minimum Technical Requirements
These minimum technical requirements for GenEdWeb will be in effect for all students entering the program from Fall term 2007 through Summer term 2009. New minimum requirements may be published during that time, but computers meeting the requirements given here will be usable for all GenEdWeb courses through at least Summer 2009. Each fall's minimum technical requirements will be guaranteed to be usable for a period of at least two years.
Fall 2007 minimum technical requirements:
- A computer capable of running Internet Explorer 5.5.
- Operating system: Windows XP, Windows 2000, or Mac OS version 8.1 or above.
- Monitor must be color and must be capable of at least 1024 x 768 resolution.
- Internet access.
- Access must be through a service provider or networked institution in your local area (Internet access will not be provided by the University).
- Modem speed must be 56.6 kbps (V.90 protocol) or higher.
- Multimedia capabilities.
- A drive able to read CD-ROM disks.
- Sound card and speakers (or headphones).
- Selected courses may require free RealPlayer and/or QuickTime software.
Minimum technical requirements to use CD-ROM required in Introduction to Statistics (Stat 1601):
- Macintosh: System 7.5 or higher; 68040/25 MHzor Power Mac; RAM: 16 MB; Monitor: 640x480x256; Double Speed CD-ROM drive
- Windows: Windows 95; 486/66 MHz; RAM: 12 MB; Monitor: 640x480x256; Double Speed CD-ROM drive; 8-bit sound card (Quicktime Compatible)
If you are planning on purchasing a new computer in order to take the GenEdWeb program, a sample recommended system for Fall 2007 would be:
- Intel Pentium 4 processor running at 2.66 GHz
- 512 MB RAM
- 20 GB or more hard disk drive
- 17" color CRT or 15" flat panel monitor
- CD-RW/DVD-ROM combo drive
- Wavetable-type sound card
- Speakers and microphone
- Windows XP home edition
